You’ll find RV-compatible spaces and dump stations, but no hookups exist in this park. Some campsites operate on a first-come, first-served basis, but you can reserve others from September through the end of May. Make reservations online up to six months in advance. It’s an excellent place to hike, climb rocks, take photographs, or pitch a tent and sleep underneath a starry sky free of light pollution. At this charming trail, you can have a fun time as you take in the eye-catching surroundings, read the informative signs, and line up to take a picture backed by the massive Arch Rock. The Arch Rock Nature Trail is one of the most prominent and heavily trafficked trails in the park because it features the iconic Arch Rock, a colossal arch-shaped granite rock formation.

The 20th-century ranch is now a protected building, and you can take a guided walking tour around it to learn more about its history. The 90-minute guided walk is led by one of the park rangers and is undoubtedly one of the coolest things to do in Joshua Tree besides hike. Unfortunately, tours only run from October to May, though, as the summer months are too hot. Keys View is the highest viewpoint in the park and one of the most famous places to visit in Joshua Tree for sunset. As the sun descends over the valley, you’ll witness the sky turning gorgeous shades of pink and purple, giving the landscape a glowing appearance.

Rock Climbing

If it’s views you’re after, Keys View will deliver. Visiting during the day will give you panoramic views of the Salton Sea, the mountains, and on particularly clear days you might even see Mexico. If you’re looking for a short nature trail with a big payoff, check out the mile long Barker Dam Nature Trail. Along the trail, you’ll see swaths of Joshua Trees, a dam from the 1800s, and even ancient petroglyphs left behind by early humans.

However, during Winter months, Joshua Tree’s drier and warmer climate means the National Park becomes a primetime playground for experienced climbers in the area. For those with 4WD vehicles, you have an advantage over everyone else at Joshua Tree. You can take an 18 mile off road trail among some of the most interesting landscapes inside the National Park. Barker Dam was built over 100 years ago by cattle ranchers who needed to conserve a deserts most precious commodity – water. Highly recommended for those who prefer relaxing walks around interesting rock formations and families with young children.
